Sorrento Baths destroyed

UPDATE: Firefighters have battled an intense blaze overnight which has destroyed The Baths restaurant on Pt Nepean Road at Sorrento.

CFA District 8 Operations Officer Arthur Haynes said crews arrived shortly after 8pm to find the roof space engulfed by fire.

“Crews battled hard to bring the blaze under control given its intensity,” he said.

“The laminated glass windows around the building made access inside the building difficult.

“Due to the location of the building firefighters initially dealt with a lack of water pressure, which was quickly resolved.”

Eleven crews worked to bring the fire under control by 10.30pm.

Crews from Frankston, Rye, Sorrento, Rosebud and Mt Martha were in attendance.

A fire investigator will be on scene this morning to determine the cause.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

EARLIER:

Just after 8.15pm on Sunday night CFA firefighters were notified of a fire in The Baths restaurant on Point Nepean Road in Sorrento.

When the first crews arrived on scene they found the building well alight in the centre and roof cavity.

CFA Operations Officer Arthur Haynes said, “With low water pressure in the area and the building securely locked, they worked hard to gain entry to the seat of the fire by doing an external fire attack.”

As further crews arrived from Rye and Rosebud and a relay boost of water from surrounding fire hydrants via pumpers they started to gain control of the fire.

Police closed the roadway and kept the large crowds back as additional vehicles arrived from Frankston and Mt Martha and assisted with the fire fight. A majority of the structure has been destroyed and fire investigators will be attending in the morning to confirm the cause of the fire.

The café is built on the site of the old baths that used to be in the area and it is believed the building closed around 4.30pm after a day’s trading.
