Thinking of modifying your fire station?

For those brigades thinking about an extension, a new shed or upgrading their amenities, CFA is introducing a new process to help brigades scope and cost their proposals, at no cost to the brigade.

This process will also assist CFA fulfill its responsibility to provide a safe workplace, ensure that all buildings works are compliant with relevant planning/building codes and government guidelines, and that all modifications are recorded for future maintenance.

This process will apply where a brigade is proposing works up to the value of $75,000 through the VESEP program or where the total value of the project exceeds $75,000 and the brigade proposes to fully fund the initiative.

To this end, where a brigade wishes to propose any modifications or extensions (including additional outbuildings/sheds) to their station they must, in concert with the local planning process, register the project and then gain local approval before proceeding.

The registration process will involve the brigade providing a brief description of the proposed works, an estimate of cost, funding source and the nomination of a brigade contact officer. CFA Land and Building Services will then work with the brigade to undertake an initial desktop review of the proposed scope of works, undertake a site inspection (where required) and a cost assessment prior to the brigade seeking local approval to proceed.

Subject to local endorsement of the proposed works, VESEP applications can then be submitted in line with the advertised VESEP program process and timelines (usually March). If the VESEP application is successful, CFA Land and Buildings will then provide assistance with more detailed scoping of the project; engage relevant external consultants; prepare and oversee planning and building approvals; obtain and validate quotations/tendering (where applicable); and carry out contract management and commissioning, all at no cost to the brigade.

Locally-endorsed brigade-funded projects should be submitted through the local planning process to the relevant Assistant Chief Officer for prioritisation/endorsement and then to the Manager Infrastructure Planning. If approved, CFA Land and Buildings will then provide assistance as outlined above.

If you want to register a project, or seek assistance in planning a project, the nominated CFA contact officer is Bruce Rowley, VESEP Minor Works Project Manager who can be contacted on 5833 2425 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
