Perhaps the oldest club currently operating under the banner of CFA’s Sports and Recreation Association is for keen fisher folk. Running since the early 1990s, the club currently has about 40 members who enjoy good company as they throw a line into rivers around Victoria.
“It’s a nice way to share a pastime,” says current club president and Dandenong Senior Station Officer Glenn Pröbstl. “We’re not overly competitive and promote catch and release although it’s not a rule. We’re family friendly with a membership of staff, retirees, volunteers and friends growing through word of mouth.”
The club runs two permanent competitions with junior and senior categories. Member’s camp on the Murray River at Cobram anytime between 1-8 December each year with points for the longest cod caught.
In June/July, the action shifts to Tambo where members stay at Bream Lodge and aim to catch the longest bream. There is also a prize for the heaviest carp or other noxious fish with invasive species obviously not released back into the river.
“The club has a barbecue trailer and a portable hot water unit so we can make it pretty comfortable for our members,” continues Glenn. “The Cobram event is supported by Cobram Outdoors and Bream Lodge is a great supporter of our Tambo competition.
“We have people take annual leave and come along. Membership fees are $15 a year and you don’t need to have a boat. The emphasis is on friendship, family and enjoyment.”
