CFA’s commitment to White Ribbon Day was recognised this morning at CFA Headquarters in East Burwood and at many fire stations across the State.
Chief Officer Joe Buffone led a ceremony on the steps of 8 Lakeside Drive where a large group of CFA members gathered to swear the oath and commit to end all types of violence against women.
Joe Buffone, an advocate of the campaign called on all male CFA members to swear the oath, stand up, speak out or simply spread the message to act to prevent men's violence against women. “Let’s demonstrate that CFA says - No to violence against women,” said Joe.
CFA’s Chief Executive Officer Lucinda Nolan quoting the terrible statistics in Australia says they make it quite evident that domestic violence is the most common type of assault inflicted on women. “One in three women has suffered physical or sexual violence, committed by someone they know,” she says. In Australia one woman is killed every week by a current or ex-partner, on average. “This isn’t acceptable, there’s no excuse and stopping the violence is everyone’s responsibility,” Lucinda says.
CFA Fire Brigades from all over the State have embraced the ethos of White Ribbon Day and are overtly demonstrating their commitment by attaching ‘White Ribbon emblems” on fire trucks and other brigade vehicles.

Initiatives like White Ribbon are leading the way to build greater equality and respect.
The campaign is about “recognising the positive role that men play in preventing violence against women. It fosters and encourages male leadership, based on the understanding that most men are not violent.”
