In these districts, no fires can be lit or be allowed to remain alight in the open air, including campfires and burn-offs, between midnight tonight to 11.59pm tomorrow.
Victoria’s emergency services are preparing for a challenging day tomorrow, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting warmer weather and issuing a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds ahead of a strong cold front crossing the state during the afternoon and evening. These winds could threaten trees weakened by fire and recent rain.
The Fire Danger Rating is Extreme in the Mallee, Severe in the Wimmera, South West, Northern Country and North Central Districts; Very High in Central and North East Districts and High in the West, South Gippsland and East Gippsland Districts.
State Response Controller Alistair Drayton said that while Victoria’s fire agencies and emergency managers were on alert and prepared for the conditions, the community needed to be equally alert and prepared to help prevent fires.
“Despite experiencing a mild few days, hot, dry and windy conditions are expected again tomorrow, with the potential for increased fire activity,” he said.
“East Gippsland and the North East still have active bushfires which have burnt more than 1.4 million hectares. Unfortunately there’s no room for complacency.” Mr Drayton said. “It’s already been a long fire season, but we know there is more hot weather to come.”
“Stay aware of your surroundings and if you’re travelling or are in unfamiliar places, make sure you are aware of the local risk. Know how to stay informed and never rely on one source for emergency information.”
