Update on East Gippsland fires

CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria crews continue to work in steep terrain on bushfires burning in parts of East Gippsland.

Regional Controller, Trevor Owen said firefighters had contained the fires at Marlo-Cabbage Tree Creek, Buchan South and Dargo.

“Crews are focused building containment lines around the Timbarra - Sunny Point fire, north of Buchan, which is currently 5,500 hectares and not yet under control.”

“While other fires are now contained, there is a lot of work to be done to black out areas within the perimeters that are still burning, so there will continue to be smoke visible to local communities.”

A public meeting for the community will be held at Buchan Recreational Reserve Pavilion at 6.00pm on Thursday 28 September.

The meeting will discuss the status of the Buchan fires and the future management options for the fires.

A Public Information Point will also be set up at Buchan Fire Station daily from 11.00am to 5.00pm, where anyone can stop in for bushfire updates.

The road to Buchan is open, Buchan Caves are open to day visitors and the Marlo-Conran and Marlo-Cabbage Tree roads are open.

The Marlo Plains Road and Old Coast Road east of Marlo-Conran Road and the Timbarra Road and camping areas remain closed.

The majority of Gippsland is still open to the public. However, it is important to take extra care, especially in areas where there could be fire fighting vehicles and personnel fighting fires.
