Members and visitors can try out CFA’s virtual reality training technology at the CFA/VFBV State Championships.

Developed by firefighters for firefighters, the innovative FLAIM Trainer and Extinguisher systems gives our volunteers a real-life experience to assess their skills without exposing them to danger.

It works in a similar way to a flight simulator for pilot training but is designed specifically for firefighters, combining virtual reality technology with real-life equipment such as a hose and nozzle, BA and heat suit that simulate both the visual and sensory feelings of being in a real fire.

CFA Digital Learning Manager Operational Doctrine and Training Kirsty Waugh said the FLAIM Trainer complements training and tools currently being used, and offers many additional benefits to members.

“High-risk scenarios can be difficult to replicate. In VR, these scenarios can be simulated so you can complete them several times and practice your skills,” Kirsty said.

“We’re based in the marquee at the Champs so make sure you come down and meet the team and try out this amazing new technology.”

At the Urban Juniors weekend, eight-year-old Zavier from Echuca Brigade had a great time using the FLAIM Extinguisher, saying “VR is great for CFA because it inspires you”.

He recommended that all members should “give it a go”.
