The District 2 Operations Support Team recently enjoyed a guided tour of the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre development project, led by Tony Stephens and Darren Burren from Malmsbury FB.
The Victorian Coalition Government’s $46 million investment in Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct will provide additional capacity and training facilities for young offenders, while offering increased capacity and better security.
The self-contained medium to high security centre will be enclosed by a security fence and the new reception building includes new state-of-the-art ray security equipment.
The new, purpose built facility will significantly expand capacity in the youth justice system, easing accommodation pressure and allowing for greater flexibility in the way young people are accommodated across both the Parkville and Malmsbury precincts.
As part of Victoria’s dual-track youth justice system, Malmsbury currently detains young offenders aged 18 to 21 years who have positive prospects for rehabilitation, or would be vulnerable in the adult prison system due to factors including their immaturity, intellectual disability and mental health issues.
Three separate 15-bed units will be established within the site, better enabling a broader range of clients to be accommodated according to their specific needs. This includes accommodating people with violent and aggressive behaviours who have been challenging to manage at Parkville.
