Wareek & Bung Bong Fire Brigade has secured a second tanker thanks to a generous donation from a family who suffered a heartbreaking loss during Black Saturday.
The brigade obtained a new 1.2.4D tanker during an official handover and service award presentation evening on Wednesday 3 August at Wareek Hall.
The new tanker was made possible thanks to a generous donation of $10,000 from the Grady family who are based in Glen Waverley. The Gradys are related to Wareek’s Ipsen family who are heavily involved in the local brigade.
Norm and Ann Grady tragically lost their son, Geoffrey, during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. The sum of $10,000 was given to the family following the fatal fires and the Gradys chose to donate it to the fire brigade.
Wareek & Bung Bong Fire Brigade Captain Brian Hanley said the brigade really appreciated the Grady family’s donation.
“This second truck is a real asset. We wouldn’t be here (at this function) without the Grady family’s generous donation. We very much appreciated it,” he said.
After the official tankover handover, brigade volunteers were also recognised for their years of service, which totalled over 440 years. The service awards ranged from five to 50 years, with long-time member Ken Calder acknowledged for half a century of service.
“It’s important to celebrate members of the brigade,” CFA Operations Officer Bruce Quarrier said. “There is in excess of 440 years of service to the community here. That’s an outstanding achievement.”
