They say that social connections and organisational relationships are essential qualities that help knit together the fabric of a strong community. On a hot, blustery Total Fire Ban day in the middle of December in Wedderburn, this could not have been more evident.
Wedderburn is a small rural town tucked away in the south of District 20. With a surprisingly small population of under 700 people, Wedderburn boasts a rich source of community assets that would rival many towns twice its size.
The town’s Emergency Services Organisations (ESOs) are a shining example of this. In partnership with the local P-12 College and the Wedderburn Community House, Wedderburn CFA and Brigade Sustainability Pilot project coordinated the inaugural Wedderburn Community Emergency Services Christmas Day. The back of the Community House was transformed into an action-packed information circuit showcasing the local Police, SES, CERT, Lions and CFA. And Santa was there too! “Having Santa there on the day helped the children associate better with the local ESOs”, said an attending local CERT volunteer. “They’re not daunted by the representation of uniforms”, she added.
Traditionally the day has run as a Christmas break-up in partnership with the school, but this year the ESOs got together under extreme weather conditions to showcase the importance of community emergency safety in a fun and engaging way. “The interactive learning was fantastic. The kids asked a lot of questions and had a great time,” said one CFA volunteer. “And I had a ball too!”

The Brigade’s Operations Officer, Bryan Suckling was pleased with the day. “The event contributed to a very positive vibe around the brigade,” said Officer Suckling. And the success of the day and its importance in the community didn’t go unnoticed by ACO Mike Wassing. “This type of work facilitated in a coordinated and professional manner between brigade, District and the Brigade Sustainability Pilot leads well for future and ongoing needs within our communities and brigades”, he said.
And next year? A resounding yes! A stronger, prouder and capable Emergency Services partnership in Wedderburn.
