Werribee CFA volunteers Emily Martignago and Lino Zulian were in the right place at the right time when a patron of the local RSL went into anaphylactic shock at a Lions Club event.
Emily and Lino were representing their brigade at the Werribee Lions Club dinner to receive a generous donation of $3000 when a woman had a severe allergic reaction to her food.
The two volunteers proved that CFA members are always on duty when they sprang into action and helped the woman administer her medication and follow her health plan.
Emily who has been a member of the Werribee Brigade for almost five years said the woman administered her first epi-pen and I was standing by ready with the second.
“Lino and I helped lower the woman to the ground so we were able to monitor her vital signs and breathing,” Emily said.
“Lino was on the phone to the ambulance and relaying the lady’s condition which allowed us to receive some great advice on how best to help her.
The president of the Werribee Lions Club, Kerry Cook, was grateful for the pair’s presence.
Kerry said although the lady had a great plan in place and knew what to do it was reassuring to have Lino and Emily present to assist.
“When I went to speak to them, Emily and Lino quickly reacted,” said Kerry.
“The situation was made easier with Lino liaising with the ambulance and Emily talking to keeping the patient comfortable and calm.”
Lino is a veteran of the Werribee fire brigade being a member for almost 30 years.
Lino said it was one big team effort thanks to the RSL, the Lions Club and the SES who were also guests at the dinner.
“We love what we do which is pretty clear as Werribee is the biggest volunteer brigade in the state,” Lino said.
“We’re fortunate to live in a great community, they help us and in turn we help them and we are very grateful to the Lions club for their donation.”
In the end Emily and Lino’s work was well worth it finishing of their efforts with a yummy chicken parma and some great company.
