Where there’s smoke there’s not much fire

An enormous factory building in Keysborough was filled with smoke this morning (Thursday) as a result of a likely machine malfunction. However firefighters who responded to the incident found little in the way of actual fire.

The 100m by 100m premises was completely smoke logged when firefighters arrived just after 6.30am and entered using breathing apparatus. They focused on clearing smoke and ventilating the building.

Operations Officer Cliff O’Connor said he believed the fire started in or around a shot machine (used for cleaning metal at high temperatures), generating a large amount of smoke.

“It was a huge area to fill,” Cliff said.

Twelve workers at the factory were evacuated with three treated on scene by Ambulance Victoria for smoke inhalation. Work Cover is at the scene this morning.

Around a dozen firefighters attended from Keysborough, Dandenong, Springvale and Noble Park brigades.
