An important reminder to property owners about the grassfire risk this summer following a fire in Winchelsea in the early hours of this morning.

Just before 5am CFA crews from Winchelsea Fire Brigade, Wingeel Fire Brigade and Birregurra responded with the support of four private firefighting units from the local area.

The fire was believed to have been started by a lightning strike

CFA Captain Kaylene Stocks said the fire presented challenges which were overcome with great team work.

“Firefighting in the dark can be difficult with the addition of long grass and rocky terrain,” she said.

“We had the support of the private firefighting units which meant we could round up the fire quickly and had it extinguished within around half an hour.”

Thankfully there was no further damage to the property.

Kaylene said it is an important reminder not to be complacent when it comes to fire,

“Grassfires can start and spread quickly and are extremely dangerous,” said Kaylene

“Even with the current rain fall, this shows that the grass is still dry enough to burn.”
