Women who’d like to hear more about firefighting as a full-time career are invited to come along to the “Women in Career Firefighting’ information session at 10am on Saturday 9 May at Bangholme, in Melbourne’s South East.
Attendees will hear presentations from current CFA career firefighters, and can take up the option to try out practical skills and physical challenges they might encounter on the job and as part of the application process.
CFA’s Tegan Fisher said for fit, active, community-minded women looking for a change, a firefighting as a career was well worth considering.
“It’s not something on the radar for most women but we are trying to raise the profile of career firefighting to try to attract more females into our career firefighter ranks.
“The information session is a good chance to meet current firefighters, get a sense of what the job is about, and to get first-hand guidance on preparing for the physical challenges and beep test.
“It’s a challenging role and a competitive application process – but once you get through the benefits are fantastic.
“The work-life balance is excellent, not to mention the sense of satisfaction and reward you get from interacting with diverse sections of the community. A lot of our firefighters are surprised once they get into the job by not only the day-to-day variety but the options and career pathways that open up to them,” Tegan said.
After graduating from a 19-week recruit course, CFA career firefighters are posted to one of the 30-plus integrated stations in regional Victoria or the outer areas of Melbourne.
