Year 11 students get firsthand look at emergency response

Werribee Fire Brigade hosted a Year 11 sport and recreation class at MacKillop College on Wednesday morning (20 June) to learn basic skills about dealing with emergencies and see what it’s like to be a firefighter.

Werribee firefighters give a lesson.

The students were presented with a scenario where a friend had been hit by a car and were then asked to respond as though the situation was real. CFA firefighter Rohan Rizzoli who holds the role as Sport Administrator at MacKillop College said educating students was not just about personal safety but community safety.

“People get hit by cars or are in car accidents every day, and with our rescue unit we see that those first few minutes before we or the ambulance arrive are vital in saving lives,” said Rohan.

“Today we were teaching the students from MacKillop College what to do in those situations.”

Mackillop College student Ally Rigo said the morning lesson was really worthwhile.

“I feel a lot more confident now after having been through this with CFA firefighters, that I could provide assistance to a person,” she said.

Werribee brigade has a busy road rescue unit. As well as responding to fires, they are often first on scene to collisions in the Wyndham area.
