Brigade saves Olinda landmark

Quick action by Olinda's volunteer brigade has saved a popular local restaurant from fire.

Firefighters were on scene within a few minutes around 3:40pm (Thursday 29 May), confining the blaze to the kitchen of the Ivy Restaurant, preventing it spreading to the rest of the building.

Early indications are hot, freshly tumble dried tea towels sparked the fire after spontaneously combusting.

The phenomenon occurs when oils or cleaning products embedded in the material cause the hot towels to catch fire.

The kitchen area was badly damaged by fire and smoke, while the remainder of the restaurant also suffered smoke damage.
