CFA’s Loch Sport Fire Brigade is calling for Gippsland locals to jump on their bike to help find a cure for motor neurone disease (MND), in memory of a fellow firefighter.
For the second year running on Saturday 15 October, the Cox’s Bridge to Cox’s Place – Ride for Research and Care for MND event aims to raise $20,000 for MND Australia. The ride will start at Cox’s Bridge in Sale and end at the late Bruce Cox’s home in Loch Sport. Bruce was a beloved brigade member who died from MND in March 2016.
Loch Sport Brigade Captain Dennis Berg said his members havel donate $2000 from their own fundraising kitty to help the event exceed last year’s success.
“Bruce was my best mate it was very sad to see him go, especially from a disease as debilitating as MND,” Mr Berg said.
“Many local people knew him as a man dedicated to his community. Bruce was the much loved Secretary of the Loch Sport CFA for many years, while also playing footy. Put simply, he was a tireless community supporter having been involved in many sports and local clubs in Sale and Loch Sport.
“This event is not only a way to raise funds to fight MND but also to celebrate the memory of a wonderful member of our community.
“Last year, we had about 80 riders and raised $9000 from the event, so we want to keep up the good work and hopefully make this year bigger and better.”
AFL legend Neale Daniher, who was recently diagnosed with MND, will fire the starting gun while in Sale on a fundraising journey of his own – the Daniher’s Drive for MND.
“We heard about the Daniher’s Drive and got in touch with the organisers to see if there was a chance to join forces somewhere,” Mr Berg said.
“They were more than happy to accommodate and have organised for Neale to be available to start everyone off.”
