Community warnings workshops

Over the past month Brigades in the Knox region have been participating in an innovative community warnings workshop.

The purpose of the workshop was to increase the knowledge about Warnings & Advice to CFA members within the Knox Group of Brigades in Region 13.

Information sessions were delivered to Brigade members at their Fire Stations and covered both general information about Warnings & Advice as well as the process of issuing warnings to the community.

Marc Unsworth, a volunteer at Montrose Fire Brigade who facilitated these sessions said:

“The program which I developed ulitilsing knowledge gained in my employment as a CFA Project Coordinator (community warnings), aims to increase CFA brigade member’s knowledge and understanding of Warnings & Advice within the state of Victoria.

“This is done by explaining the different levels of Advice, Watch & Act and Emergency Warning and the community action associated with them for both Bushfire/Grassfire and HAZMAT/Structure warnings.

“The objective of this program comes under CFA’s mission statement of protecting lives and property –by providing important information to CFA brigade members which will support the community.”

“The feedback that we got from the program which so far has been specific to district 13 has been very positive, and CFA members have got a lot from taking part,” he added.

Several Brigades participated in the program including Montrose, Scoresby, Upper Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Rowville, Bayswater and The Basin.
