Epping tip fire sparked by spontaneous combustion

Spontaneous combustion is believed to be the cause of a fire which started in a mulch pile at a green waste facility at Epping yesterday.

CFA District 14 Rostered Duty Officer Gavin Wright said 15 crews from CFA and MFB attended the Cooper Street property at about 5.20pm.

“We had a 60 by10metre pile of mulch which had caught fire due to spontaneous combustion and it was putting up a lot of smoke,” Mr Wright said.

“We put an Advice Message out as smoke was visible in surrounding residents at Epping, Thomastown and Lalor,” he said.

No properties were threatened during the fire.

“We had to call in extra resources because we had to run hoses from the street into the fire, which was about 600 metres away.”

“It took about five hours to extinguish and the property owners are now monitoring the area,” Mr Wright said.
