Fire at Maddingley tip

CFA attended a fire at an industrial tip near Bacchus Marsh overnight.

Crews were called to the incident on Bacchus Marsh-Geelong Road, Maddingley just after 9.30pm.

The fire took about three hours to bring under control with the tip site spanning an area of 100 x 100 metres and containing industrial and hazardous waste. The site was also a former brown coal open cut mine.

Because of this, crews were required to keep out of the smoke and use breathing apparatus to fight the fire.

While CFA has extinguished the fire, the company is continuing work at the site today to ensure there are no remaining hot spots.

More than 60 firefighters from Bacchus Marsh, Balliang, Bullengarook, Coimadai, Corio, Eynesbury, Melton, Myrniong, Parwan, Rowsley and Toolern Vale attended.

The cause of the fire is believed to be spontaneous combustion.
