Fire at Park Orchards

CFA crews are attending a fire burning at a site carrying landfill at Stintons Road in Park Orchards.

Around 16 crews are slowly gaining the upper hand on the fire on a ‘wall’ of a curved landfill area. The area burning is approximately 50 metres long by 30 metres high.

CFA District 13 Operations Officer Don Tomkins said firefighters were called out to the fire at around 4.30pm and it took around half an hour to bring under control.

The fire is burning deep into one side of the landfill ‘wall’.

Don said crews were making good progress in extinguishing the fire, but water supply had been a challenge.

“There isn’t a water supply at the scene, so we’ve had to transport water from hydrants in the local neighbourhood,” he said.

“Firefighters are using ground monitors to help extinguish the fire as well as using Class A foam.

“We’re slowly gaining the upper hand, but the fire is hot and deep and likely to burn all night.”

An advice message to residents has been issued and will remain in place overnight.

CFA will meet with Manningham Council and EPA on Thursday to determine a strategy to pull apart the smouldering material.
