Firefighters battle fire at former power station

Firefighters are currently battling a condenser unit fire at the former Alcoa power station in Anglesea.

Crews were called the incident shortly prior to 3pm.

District 07 Operations Officer Wayne Aylmer said the disused condenser unit is made of magnesium and titanium.

“These materials can prove difficult to extinguish, fortunately the condenser unit is surrounded by mineral earth,” Mr Aylmer said.

“Our priority is to cool the condenser unit down and extinguish with mineral earth.

“The former power station is surrounded by a national park, Forest Fire Management Victoria firefighters are supporting CFA by monitoring the surroundings and ensuring this fire does not spread into bushlands.

“There is a significant amount of smoke billowing from the fire; the smoke is no risk to the site.

Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been notified.

Five CFA appliances from Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Belmont and Corio are in attendance.
