CFA firefighters continue to remove 500 tonnes of grain from an industrial shed near Corio Wharf, North Geelong today, after the substance started smoldering last night.
District 7 Operations Officer Wayne Aylmer said the only way to fight this kind of fire was to remove the grain and spread it in a safe area nearby.
“It’s a major job and firefighters are only about halfway through after working through the night,” Mr Aylmer said.
“They’re doing an incredible job to get this under control.”
Firefighters managed potential dust explosions from inside the shed, as well as fumigation chemicals used on the grain.
“Crews have secured the area to ensure there is no risk to any surrounding properties or people,” Mr Aylmer said.
Eight trucks have been on the scene since around 8pm last night, including five from Corio and three from Geelong. Firefighters expect it will take several more hours to remove and spread the rest of the grain.
While the cause is unknown, the fire is not suspicious.
EPA has been notified.
