Growing community resilience from the ground up

Member News image Members from Riddells Creek Fire Brigade join forces with staff at Riddells Creek Nursery to promote fire wise garden design

On 22 and 23 October, Riddells Creek Fire Brigade members teamed up with their local nursery for a community education event.

Riddells Creek Nursey put together a display of fire wise plants with signage and tips about maintaining gardens for fire safety. Brigade members complemented this with information from CFA's Landscaping For Bushfires booklet and from brochures about hills gardens, suburban gardens and rural gardens.

The brigade engaged the community about their garden and property maintenance as they made their way around the nursery. They also discussed the new fire danger rating system with them and the importance of the action-based messages.

The nursery environment, along with the displays, allowed CFA volunteers to have meaningful discussions about fire safety.

The brigade's catering and support team fired up a barbecue and served bacon, eggs and sausages to brighten up the dreary weather day.

Despite the rain it was a successful event and a fantastic way to engage people to think about fire safety in a way that interested them.
