Inter-agency rugby match pits fireys against police

Police have challenged fireys to a women’s rugby 7s exhibition game in Bendigo on 20 October - and you can get involved.

ED People and Culture Liz Radcliffe and DCO Steph Rotarangi will play in the combined firefighter team.

The Police vs Fire rugby challenge is a worldwide phenomenon and now it is our chance to take our place in Victoria’s history.

The challenge has been put down to CFA, MFB and FFMVic to put together a women’s team to play the exhibition match as part of Rugby Victoria’s Bendigo 7s Rugby Tournament. The tournament is Victoria’s largest and will see more than 40 Australian and international teams compete in a range of competition levels.

Participation in the firefighter team is open to all female CFA, MFB and FFMVic staff and volunteers. Players must have a reasonable level of fitness and given the contact nature of the game, rugby experience is recommended.

The combined fireys team will take on Victoria Police as the opening match in the Bendigo 7s tournament.

CFA recently announced its affiliation with women’s rugby in Victoria, entering into a three-year partnership - the first of its kind in Australian grassroots rugby. The partnership provides the opportunity for CFA to increase the participation of women in local community organisations across Victoria.

DCO Steph Rotarangi and ED People and Culture Liz Radcliffe have already put their hands up to play and can’t wait to run out onto the field in the combined fire team.

“This game is a great opportunity to continue to develop CFA’s role in supporting women’s rugby in Victoria and give VicPol a good run for their money,” Steph said.

Express your interest in joining the team as a player or supporter by emailing s.rotarangi@cfa.vic.gov.au by 15 September 2018.

The game will be held at Epsom Huntley Recreation Reserve in Bendigo on Saturday 20 October.
