Kinglake home destroyed by fire

A Kinglake resident was at his backyard shed when he noticed smoke billowing from his home on Mountain Home Road around 12pm today.

The man quickly called 000 and CFA crews arrived minutes later, attacking the fire from the outside. The resident managed to open a door to let his cat escape.

The fire looks to have started in the middle of the home, so once the fire had been doused as much as possible from outside, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the roof to put out flames, which had spread.

Kinglake Fire Brigade Lieutenant Barry Byrne said the resident’s quick action enabled firefighters to save part of the home.

“There’s a fair bit of damage – about 60 per cent of the house is gone – but he’ll be able to salvage some furniture and we saved a few rooms,” Mr Byrne said.

“Our firefighters did a great job, working together with a few different crews to extinguish this pretty serious fire.”

The fire was deemed under control at 1.15pm. Crews from Kinglake, Kinglake West, St Andrews and Toolangi attended.
