Malmsbury roadside burns

Malmsbury Fire Brigade commenced conducting some roadside burns as part of its township protection strategies.

The brigade worked with the community, District 2 and the Kyneton Group to identify roadsides that would best protect vulnerable residents should the township be impacted by a Grass fire.

Assistance from the District 2 Vegetation Management Officer was integral to ensuring a comprehensive burn plan was done, which included getting sign-off from Council, D2 Ops Manager and the DSE Biodiversity officer.

Group Officer John PEARCE said: "District 2 is very supportive of Brigades working with the community to identify areas at risk and putting in place strategies to reduce that risk". "Kyneton Group encourages our brigades to work together with initiatives such as these and it is a good training opportunity for some of our newer members"

The Brigade has burned some of the Gorse prior to the grass curing and will revisit in coming weeks to burn the grass as it dries out. Community consultation occurred prior to the burns with mail-outs, posters in the town and a copy of the burn plan being made available at the general store.

Several grateful residents also turned up to thank the brigades and show their support.

Malmsbury, Kyneton, Spring Hill and Benloch brigades assisted on the day.
