Man saved from cat-astrophe

A fast thinking feline is being praised for helping to save its owners life, after alerting the man to a house fire which destroyed his Wandin North home early this morning (01/09).

The house was fully involved in fire when crews arrived and took about 25 firefighters just over an hour to bring it under control.

Yellingbo CFA Captain Paul Spinks said crews prevented the fire spreading to nearby properties and bushland.

“The resident was very lucky to be woken by his cat,” he said.

The cat alerted its owner to danger when it woke the man by jumping on his head and scratching him.

Both the man and his cat escaped the blaze unharmed.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Fire investigators will be on scene this afternoon to determine the cause.

Crews from Bayswater, Mount Evelyn, Wandin, Seville and Yellingbo attended.
