Numurkah tyre fire

A large number of old tyres have caught fire out the back of a tyre recycling site at Numurkah, producing an extensive amount of thick black smoke in the area.

CFA was called to the scene around 12.45pm in Saxton Street. The fire has been contained to a 50X50 metre area and is expected to be extinguished within an hour.

Crews will remain on scene for some time blacking out and a fair amount of smoke is expected to remain in the area.

CFA issued an Advice message due to the excessive amount of smoke drifting over the town. Residents are advised to stay indoors.

There are 23 CFA trucks, 3 field command vehicles and more than 100 firefighters battling the blaze.

The cause of the fire will be investigated but is believed to be suspicious.

The Goulburn Valley Highway at Numurkah has been closed, for more details please check the VicRoads website.
