Plumber plunges in to save the day

A quick thinking plumber has averted a potential gas leak at a child care centre in Monbulk around midday today.

District 13 Operations Officer Colin Brown said an elderly couple travelling down Olinda – Monbulk  Road failed to brake, causing a three car pileup, which is believed to have caused a ute to rupture a gas main at the child care centre.

“The initial car failed to brake causing a flow on effect of the second car involved running up the back of the third car, which then knocked out a footing underneath the building.”

“This caused the gas main to rupture but as it happened the driver of the ute was a plumber, so he quickly isolated the main before CFA crews were on scene.”

Mr Brown said there was only minor structural damage to the child care centre and the children did not need to be evacuated.

CFA crews from Monbulk and Kallista were on scene.
