Nominations are now open for the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) as part of the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The AFSM is awarded for distinguished service to fire services across Australia. Only one award is presented to an individual, and recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters AFSM.

Visit the CFA Awards website for nomination information

Introduced in 1988, the medal is awarded twice a year, in the Australia Day and the Queen’s Birthday Honours lists, in recognition of distinguished service by a member of an Australian fire service.

Each year CFA coordinates nominations for the medal to ensure the best possible opportunity for our people to receive the award.

CFA fire investigator Nicole Harvey was honoured with an AFSM in the 2019 Australia Day Honours.

Drouin Brigade Captain John William Atkins received an AFSM in the 2018 Australia Day Honours list.

Any CFA person can put forward a nomination for someone they know who deserves to be honoured.

The AFSM is awarded by the Governor of Victoria at a dedicated ceremony at Government House in Melbourne.

By participating in Australian Honours we recognise the exceptional contribution our people make in their communities, in Victoria, across Australia, and even internationally. To nominate someone you know visit the CFA Awards website.

Nominations close 1 November 2019. For further information email cfa-awards@cfa.vic.gov.au or call Belinda Gillespie on 9262 8842.

Ruth Ryan received an AFSM in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for her 35 years of active service in both the forest service and CFA.
