New friends and new skills are just two of the positive impacts for Ben La Vale after joining CFA.

Moving to the area a year ago, he decided to join Lilydale Fire Brigade as a way to give back to his community and meet new people in the area. Now, he’s one of CFA’s newest firefighters.

“I joined CFA to get to know my community and learn a bit about the area,” Ben said. “I thought it would be a good way to help out and make some friends.”

Having recently completed his General Firefighter course alongside new members from Macclesfield, Yellingbo, Hillcrest and Ferntree Gully brigades, Ben has now completed his first turnout.

“The training was really good. I've learnt heaps in the last eight months, a whole range of new skills. The best part was working as part of a team, learning new skills and getting to work with a fantastic group of people.

“I've been to one incident so far, and it was good to see how everything operated and put my training into practice.”

Ben said he’s excited to see where his CFA journey takes him.

“I'm looking forward to more community activities and helping where I can. I’m excited to see the diversity of incidents I get to go to, to continue to learn new skills, and do more training.”

His brigade has been a great support as he enters his CFA journey.

“The members are great and have really helped me with their knowledge and the way that they’re putting me on a pathway to give me plenty of new opportunities.”
