Frankston Fire Brigade member Melissa has been formally commended by Ambulance Victoria following her response to a GoodSAM alert in Frankston South on 9 July.
The attending MICA Paramedic praised Melissa's exceptional actions at the scene of a cardiac arrest, particularly the compassionate emotional support she provided to the patient's fiancé during an incredibly confronting and time-critical situation. Her support eased the burden on emergency crews, allowing paramedics to focus their full attention on patient care.
Before ambulance crews arrived, Melissa provided care to the patient while relaying critical information to the 000 call-taker. She then delivered a clear handover to Ambulance Victoria crews upon their arrival.
The commendation highlights not only the care provided to the patient, but also the compassion and support Melissa showed to the patient's loved ones during an incredibly difficult time.
What makes this recognition even more remarkable is that Melissa responded as a civilian through the GoodSAM program, demonstrating an incredible commitment to supporting her local Frankston community when people need it most. Sadly, the patient later passed away in hospital.
Melissa, who has been a member of Frankston Fire Brigade and CFA for more than 33 years, began her firefighting journey as a Junior Firefighter and currently serves as a firefighter, Secretary and Junior Leader.
Her motivation for joining the GoodSAM program stems from a deeply personal experience.
"I decided to get involved with GoodSAM after my mother suffered a cardiac arrest in 2018,” Melissa said.
“Despite the efforts of my brother, me, CFA Emergency Medical Response crews and ambulance crews, my mum sadly passed away. It made me think about my neighbours and how I could help and support them through what could be one of the worst moments they may experience."
When asked about receiving the commendation, Melissa remained humble.
"I was surprised and shocked. I do the GoodSAM program to help those in their time of need, so the commendation is an encouragement to continue being part of the program, knowing that my efforts do make a difference, " Melissa said.
Melissa’s actions are a shining example of the values that make our CFA and wider emergency services community so special.
