CFA crews from 10 brigades joined forces last week to battle a significant house fire in Selby.

At 6:56 pm on Thursday, September 26, emergency services were alerted to a fire. CFA units from Selby, Menzies Creek, Clematis, Emerald, Monbulk, Kallista, and Belgrave were swiftly on scene, coordinating their efforts to tackle the blaze.

Specialist support from Upwey, Yellingbo, and Bayswater brigades played a crucial role, providing lighting, rehabilitation, and breathing apparatus units. Crews managed to bring the fire under control by 8:32 pm and declared the scene safe at 9:23pm. Firefighters then worked in shifts throughout the night and into the morning to ensure the fire remained contained.

Selby Fire Brigade Captain Ian Lewis emphasised the importance of teamwork when tackling big fires.

"When you get a big job like this, you have to sectorise it, and the cooperation among everyone was amazing to see," Ian said.

“The fire was well alight when we arrived, so our focus was on getting as much water on it as early as possible.

“The biggest challenge we faced was sourcing water since there’s no reticulated water in that part of Selby. That’s why we put the callout to as many brigades as possible for assistance, and the response we received was fantastic," Ian explained.

"Thankfully, house fires are few and far between in Selby, but it’s reassuring to know that when one does occur, our neighbouring brigades are more than willing to lend a hand."

Ian said that while it’s good to know neighbouring brigades are always nearby to help, the Selby Brigade could always do with a few extra members.

“We're always eager to welcome new members to help keep everyone safe."
