CFA will honour fallen firefighters at its annual memorial service this Sunday.
The 2022 Annual Memorial Service for Firefighters, held on Sunday 1 May in Churchill, will honour the 80 firefighters from both CFA and its predecessor organisation who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The memorial is an opportunity to commemorate the courage and commitment of every member we have lost and honour their dedication and contribution to the Victorian community.
The service is held every year close to International Firefighters’ Day – 4 May – a global event started by CFA members in 1999 following the tragic death of five firefighters in Linton the previous year. This year’s memorial service will mark the 34th event.
Family members and friends, CFA and Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) executives, as well as government representatives will come together to remember and honour the personal sacrifices and commitment firefighters make each and every day.
The event will be livestreamed – those who cannot attend in person can watch the livestream here.
Throughout the memorial, a number of songs will be performed by singer Ben Clarke, with readings conducted by a number of CFA and VFBV representatives, Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp APM and The Hon. Jaclyn Symes, Attorney-General and Minister for Emergency Services
Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said the event is an important time for reflection.
“The Annual Memorial Service allows us to pause and remember those we have lost throughout the years. The Service is an important chance to honour and reflect upon the sacrifices made by our firefighters – those who have passed and those who are still with us today,” said Jason.
